Ontario Fishing Questions
What is another way to can caugh walley ice fishing other than useing live baits?
Yes, there are many artificial lures that are good for walleye ice fishing. Small spinners, jigs, small sonic lures and many, many others. Best to ask a local bait shop what has been a good producer. You have to work ice lures slowly as the fish are not as active during cold weather. The fish in inland lakes are totaly different in eating habits than those in large lakes like Lake Erie where we live. sometimes when fishing is slow, attach a hook on some fancy, but cheap ear rings, and play the bottom slowly, with an up and down motion. The glitter will sometimes get them to attack.
Whats the best way to fish walley in a canoe or on shore?
Take a travel rod in medium weight and pair it with a decent reel with 10lb super line. Use jigs with gulp alive minnows and rapala crank baits. Walleye are light sensitive so during the high sun times fish the deeper water, vertical jig or slow roll sinking rapalas along the bottom. The most active bite is about 20 minutes before dark, find 15 -17 foot of water and troll along that depth, slowly padde your canoe dragging a rapala or jig behind.
What is the best fishing line for walleye?(Brand and Size)?
I am fishing for walleye in canada straight down from the boat in about 10-20 feet of water, just a splitshot and octopus hook with a minnow or worm on the end of the line.If we can not find the fish we troll and drag some buttom bouncers behind the boat. I could have extra reels for that sort of fishing. The walley are not too big we might catch a couple of 5 lb fish in two weeks but everything else is smaler. Can anybody tell me what would be the best fishing line to use under these circumstances?Brand?Size? Thanks in advance for your help.
I am very picky about my lines. I use 12lb Trilene XL for trolling and casting cranks.Everything else I use 8 lb Trilene XT, that includes jigging, lindy rigging, slip floating etc.don't worry I caught a 70 lb sturgeon on the 8lb line so it won't break off easily. Only pike and muskie will cut your line
